What is the Process?

What is the PADI® Open Water Scuba Diving Process?

Step 1 Image

Step 1

The Knowledge Development component can be undertaken at our centre in an unrushed environment, with Russel and Rose on hand to coach you, or you can choose to complete this using the convenience of PADI® eLearning from the comfort of your home.

The component is organized into five clear sections, each designed to break down complex concepts into manageable parts. You will dive into the PADI® Open Water Manual and accompanying videos, with quizzes and Knowledge Reviews along the way to reinforce key ideas. We will lead you through these Knowledge Reviews, answering questions and clearing up any uncertainties so you gain a clear and solid understanding of the content and concepts.

Ultimately, you will complete a final quiz and two multiple-choice exams. This structured approach ensures you are fully prepared, confident, and ready for the next steps in your underwater journey. At Dive Easy, we take care to make sure that every part of your learning is both safe and enjoyable, setting you up for success as you begin exploring the underwater world.

Step 2 Image

Step 2

In the pool sessions, we will work through the essential skills that build your confidence underwater. We will start with guiding you on setting up your gear step-by-step and learn how to put it on with the right technique. Russel and Rose will walk you through a Buddy Check, so both you and your buddy are fully prepped for each dive. Next, you will learn the "Giant Stride" to enter the water in your scuba gear and the techniques for inflating and deflating your BCD at the surface.

Buoyancy is a big part of scuba diving, and Russel and Rose will assist you to master this essential skill. You will practice surface buoyancy checks and learn how to descend safely, with an emphasis on protecting the underwater environment.

You will also learn how to clear water from your mask underwater—no need to surface if water seeps in. Plus, if your regulator (your air supply) ever comes out, Russel and Rose will guide you on how to recover it safely and smoothly.

We will also work on your buoyancy control to help you “hover” underwater, giving you a feeling of weightlessness.

Finally, we will cover key safety skills, ensuring you know what to do in case of any emergency, so you feel calm and prepared on every dive.

Step 3 Image

Step 3

Your Open Water Dives mark the exciting transition from pool to ocean, where you will complete your training surrounded by breathtaking reefs and vibrant marine life. Russel and Rose, your patient and attentive instructors, will be with you every step of the way, making sure you feel comfortable, supported, and safe.

During these dives, you will practice the skills you have honed in the pool in the dynamic ocean environment, gaining confidence with each dive. Before each dive, you will set up your gear, check weights, review hand signals, and conduct a buddy check—all done with calm guidance from Russel and Rose.

Once in the water, you will follow a gentle, controlled descent as you enter a world full of color and life. You will revisit the skills learned in the pool sessions, but now in the ocean at depth all under Russel and Rose's steady supervision.

By your second dive, you will start using a dive computer, learning to plan and monitor your depth and air in real time. With each dive, you will build your independence and confidence. Russel and Rose will make sure there is no rush, keeping the pace steady to give you time to absorb each step.

Any remaining time will be spent exploring the dive site, staying aware of your air consumption and your buddy's location, before using the five-point method to ascend to the surface while maintaining buddy contact and performing a safety stop along the way.

Step 4 Image

Step 4

The last step are 2 more open water dives This time you will get a chance to lead and enjoy your underwater adventure under Russel and Rose's calm and watchful guidance. By now, the basics—setting up your gear, running a buddy check, and getting into the water—are second nature. This dive brings together all you have learned, but instead of formal skills practice, you will focus on the thrill of exploring the ocean, diving deeper into the vibrant world that awaits below the surface.

Ultimately, you will plan and prepare like a pro, using a dive computer or recreational dive planner to set your depth and time. After a controlled descent without a reference line, you will concentrate on buoyancy control, maintaining a gentle presence around the reef while keeping close contact with your buddy. This dive is about discovery and confidence, putting your skills into action as you take in the sights and sounds of the underwater world. When it is time to surface, you will signal to Russel and Rose, ascending together at a safe, steady pace.

And that's it! You have completed your four dives and are now a certified PADI® Open Water Diver! With your certification, you are ready to dive independently with a buddy up to 18 meters, whether at a dive center around the corner or an exotic dive site halfway across the world. Thousands of dive sites await, and this certification is your key to exploring them. Congratulations on reaching this incredible milestone!

The Open Water certification is for new divers, covering the basics of safety, equipment, and diving techniques. You can typically gain your Open Water qualification in three to four days.

After your confined water dives, you'll head to open water for four dives, typically over two days, where you’ll apply skills learned in confined water and explore the underwater world.

The PADI® Scuba Diver course includes Knowledge Development, confined water dives, and open water dives, covering basic scuba principles and diving techniques.

You’ll need to bring a dive medical statement, Certificate of Completion for the e-learning, swimwear, towel, sunscreen, mask, snorkel, dive boots, and fins.

Your PADI® certification never expires. However, if you haven't dived in a while, it’s a good idea to refresh your skills to stay safe.

After completing your Open Water course, the next step is the PADI® Advanced Open Water, which includes specialized Adventure Dives.

Usually, no more than four dives a day are recommended. Most day trips offer two to three dives, while liveaboards may include a night dive.

There is no age limit for diving. Your health, fitness, and comfort level should guide your decision to continue or stop diving.

A PADI® OPen Water Diver is limited to a depth of 18 Meters or 60 Feet

When taking a scuba diving course, always follow your instructor's directions, practice and achieve a mastery of the skills, follow safety guidelines and never exceed your limits of training and experience.

Finding the correct community and keeping up your diver education will enable you to regularly enjoy diving.

A lot of people worry about the exam, but with Russel and Rose's guidence you will find the PADI® Open Water Exam rather simple.

PADI® Open Water Diver is the first autonomous scuba certification level, and holding the certification allows you to obtain air fills and rent dive equipment.

Never dive alone, but you can dive togerther with a buddy (who can be another Open Water Diver and does NOT have to be a diving professional) up to a maximum depth of 18 meters/60 feet
